Freediving Safety in Fresh Water

❶ Buoyancy is different in fresh water and salty water

The buoyancy in salty water is stronger, so when taking lessons in a marine environment, more efficient technique is required to be able to go down.

In fresh water, buoyancy is weaker. When first coming to Dive Cube, you will find it very easy to swim down, and you can even experience a slow “free fall” at a shallow depth.

At this time, it is easy to forget to perform the fin kickes correctly and descend too slowly. When ascending, due to the weaker buoyancy, using the same relaxed kicking or poor technique/efficiency will also make the ascent too slow, causing the dive time to be too long and increasing the risk of hypoxia!

👌 During practice, adjust your finning to buoyancy changes and maintain appropriate efficiency. The normal speed of finning with bi-fins should be 0.8-1m/s. For the 12-meter AIDA 2 course assessment, completing the entire dive within 30 seconds is preferable.

👌 In fresh water environments, be more conservative in progressing your depth to avoid difficulty in ascending. Change the ascent method if necessary (e.g., FIM to ascend).

❷ Keep yourself warm

At Dive Cube, most people choose to dive in swimsuits for better looking photos and videos. The water at Dive Cube is heated, and it would feel fine at first, but if you stay in the water for too long, you may still feel cold. When the body is cold and shivering, it is difficult to relax, and as the session time is about to end, you may want to “endure a bit,” which can lead to stronger urge to breathe, twitching, tension, and stiffness, increasing the risk of hypoxia.

If you find yourself easily getting cold, make sure to keep yourself warm by resting on land or putting on wetsuits.

❸ Implement the buddy system and be familiar with rescue

Understand and get to know your buddy’s technique level and condition before diving. Focus on each other’s safety, just as you would want to be well secured.

Regularly review diving rescue skills. Of course, we hope that everyone dives down and return safely. However, still prepare yourself to be alert and react swiftly in emergencies.

👌 At Dive Cube, people usually do filming, and it is highly recommended that both the cameraperson and the diver have their own safety guard/buddies. After all, when two people go down together, both performing breath-hold, having additional protection ensures everyone’s safety.
